Chris Rock is likely to have been back on the single market for a few months now. The comedian known for voicing Marty the zebra in the “Madagascar” film series was reported to have secretly called it quits with girlfriend of four years, Megalyn Echikunwoke, over his reluctance to settle down.
The 55-year-old and his actress girlfriend allegedly broke up before he poked fun at Jeff Bezos’ divorce at the 2020 Oscars. On the reason behind the split, one source told Page Six that he was not ready to tie the knot again after going through a painful divorce from ex-wife Malaak Compton-Rock after 18 years of marriage.
Chris filed for divorce from Malaak, the mother of his two daughter, in 2014. Soon after his divorce was finalized in 2016, he was seen together with Megalyn. They sparked engagement rumors that same year when she was photographed flaunting a ring on her ring finger. The “Almost Family” actress, however, was quick to set the record straight.
While multiple sources suggested Chris’ split from Megalyn was caused by his hesitation to settle down, Megalyn herself has previously opened up about her indifferent feeling toward the concept of marriage. “I’m actually not a huge believer in marriage,” she candidly told PEOPLE back in 2016.
“If he made a really good case for it, I guess … I guess there’s this misconception about once you’re engaged how could you possibly want anything more than marriage and kids,” the 36-year-old elaborated. “It’s kind of like lock down a rich guy. I’m here to say that there’s more to life than that, and this common lame notion that that’s all a girl could possibly want in life is completely bulls**t. So, I mean, I have a boyfriend who I love and that’s all I need.”
As for his memorable appearance at the Oscars, Chris joined forces with fellow comedian Steve Martin in taking a jab at some of the famous faces in attendance. Of the Amazon founder, he quipped, “Jeff is so rich, he got divorced and he’s still the richest man in the world. He saw ‘Marriage Story’ and thought it was a comedy.”
