Ever since Normani Kordei embarked on a solo career, she has been constantly compared to Beyonce Knowles and even gets Azealia Banks accusing her of impersonating the singing diva. Now, the 1996-born songstress has responded to the comparisons during a recent interview with Zach Sang.
Speaking to the radio host, Normani admitted to feeling happy about the comparisons. However, she realized that she’s still not at the level where she could be compared to someone like Beyonce. “It’s the biggest compliment of all compliments,” the Fifth Harmony member said. “I would not choose any other person to wanna be compared to…but I think I still have so much more work to do. I don’t feel like I’m quite deserving of that just yet.”
This comes just days after Azealia roasted her performance at Rihanna’s Savage X Fenty lingerie collection fashion show, saying that Normani was just doing a Beyonce impression. “I’m sorry, I’m not accepting her as a Beyonce replacement. Beyonce Por vida. Normani can do her Beyonce impression all damn day long. There is only ONE bey,” the “Anna Wintour” rapper commented underneath a video of Normani’s set.
Someone then urged her to stop comparing the two singers, to which Azealia responded, “Of course she can be great without comparisons… as soon as she gets her own schtick lol. Until then she is a Beyonce understudy sans the vocal prowess. A very unnecessary addition to the music world in that regard.”
Fans were quick to defend Normani after that, with some trying to see this in a positive light as all the women, such as Megan Thee Stallion and Lizzo, who had been dragged by Azealia ended up becoming more successful that her. Someone, meanwhile, said, “Azealia banks loves talking down on successful Black Woman that’s why she’s never going to be successful because all she does is put out negativity because what she said about Normani was uncalled for.”
