Overnight, the Summer Movie Season officially kicked off. Universal's Fast Five grossed an estimated $3.7M in 1,104 North American theaters. That's more than twice what the previous film, Fast & Furious, the 4th installment in the street racing franchise, did in midnight screenings ($1.8M). It's the biggest midnight screening in Universal history and the biggest for the franchise. Overseas so far, this 5th in the franchise has made $35.6M from the four territories of Australia, New Zealand, Korea, and the UK last week, as well as $2.2M in Germany where it opened Thursday as well as $155K in previews in Austria. Numbers for Russia have not come in yet. The film is No. 1 in all the territories where it's opened, proving once again the theatrical release adage that sequels do really well internationally. Domestically, big online ticket seller Fandango reports that Fast Five is its top advance ticket-seller of 2011, representing 74% of daily ticket sales going into its opening weekend in the U.S. and Canada. Disney's Prom which also opens this weekend, is taking 5% of Fandango's ticket sales. UPDATES today and all weekend.
